Please join us in welcoming Attorney Catherine (Cate) Craig to RWC! We are thrilled to announce that she has joined the Reed Wilson Case family. Cate is an experienced and compassionate estate planning attorney who holds the same mission and dedication that we do…to provide caring, understanding, and knowledgeable counsel to her clients.
The sudden loss of her parents inspired her to pursue law, leading her to attend Quinnipiac University School of Law as a night student, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. During law school, Cate earned numerous honors, including induction into Phi Delta Phi legal honor society, and was awarded The John L. Hanny Memorial Scholarship, The Sandra and Martin Lax Endowed Scholarship, and Distinguished Academic Achievement Awards in Civil Procedure I, Mediation, Healthcare Compliance Law, and Representing Clients. She also earned a Mediation Certificate and was selected by the faculty for the Superior Classroom Performance award.
As a dedicated and compassionate attorney, Cate specializes in estate planning, probate, elder law, and real estate. In 2024, she was recognized by Lawyers of Distinction for her exceptional work in Estate Planning Law. Cate Craig is an active member of the Wethersfield Chamber of Commerce and the Connecticut Bar Association’s Trust and Estates and Elder Law sections. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Healing Hoofbeats, a nonprofit that helps individuals, families, and veterans heal from trauma through Focused Equine Assisted Psychotherapy.
Cate lives in Wethersfield with her husband, three boys, and two dogs, Abby and Mia. Her proudest achievement is giving birth to her third son during her last semester of law school, (although she does not recommend this!)
10 years ago today I unexpectedly lost my mom. She was young and vibrant, and so full of life. I was devastated. Then, 4 months later, I unexpectedly lost my dad. My world came crashing down. I had a 2 year old and was pregnant with my second son and my village was gone. I left the job I had been at almost 8 years.
My husband and I made the decision to sell our first home and move 45 minutes away, back to my childhood home. A home I would live in for the next year, cleaning out 35 years of memories, while raising two small children, deeply immersed in my own grief. But while this was going on, I was also having to probate both of my parents estates. One estate stayed open for 3 years. They did not have an estate plan. I was completely overwhelmed and never once spoke with my probate attorney.
It was then that I decided to go to law school. I woke up before my kids and studied for the LSAT in the basement so I wouldn’t wake them. I applied to law schools and got a scholarship. For 4 years, I watched my kids during the day, and went to school at night. A lot of sacrifice, time, money, tears, and a third baby later, I graduated with my Juris Doctor, Magna Cum Laude, in the middle of a pandemic. I did it so that I could help people who were going through what I went through, and help avoid some of the things I had to go through. No one should be expected to navigate the probate or elder care process alone.
More people need to know what is available to them with estate planning. This is my why. I finally feel like I am where I am supposed to be, doing what I am supposed to be doing. I know there is nothing I can do to ease the pain of losing a loved one. I’ve spent the better part of the last decade realizing it is simply a void that cannot be filled. But I try my best every day to be a bright spot for people in a sad place, or a relief for people knowing I am helping them get their affairs in order. 10 years without you mom, I hope you and dad would be proud.
